This timely reminder of who we once were apart from Christ is for gratitude for all that Christ has done. However, for many this is still a current reality. This text seeks to remind believers who they once were and to propel them to go to those who are still in this way of living. Our adversary is powerful ruling over this world, but Christ has crushed him at the cross. Therefore, Christians can go forth with power that comes from Christ.
